We are inclined to pay attention when our bodies cause us pain and let us know that some kind of medical intervention is required. We are less likely to give proper attention to our mental and emotional wellbeing. Yet psychological and emotional suffering is just as debilitating as physical pain. Counselling and psychotherapy – the ‘talking therapies’ – are there to respond to the human need for mental and emotional wellbeing.
